Show You Appreciation for Writers and Editors

Digital Content

"Writing is easy. You only need to stare at a blank piece of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead."
— Gene Fowler —

Write. Read. Edit. Repeat. Quality writing requires immense creative energy and editorial skill. It is integral to effective communication, which drives PR, Marketing, Social Media, Advertising, HR, Internal Communications, and more. Samuel Johnson, the famous 18th-century English essayist, observed, “What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure.”

At EILEEN FISHER, writers and editors across all teams work tirelessly to generate outstanding content for and about the brand. Reading your work is always a pleasure, and your efforts deserve recognition every month of the year. However, this month is especially for you. September is Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month, established by Lone Star Publishing in 1984 to foster awareness and appreciation for the art and craft of writing and editing.

Some view writing as a craft, others see it as an art, and many, like Louis J. Rubin, believe it’s a blend of both. In his book Artistry in Teaching, Rubin writes, “True artistry consists of master craftsmanship through which works are conceived, planned, and executed with unusual imagination and brilliance.” From e-commerce and intranet content to advertising, marketing materials, brochures, announcements, and product education tools, EILEEN FISHER writers consistently demonstrate true artistry.

Artistry and Craftsmanship

Creating and implementing such inspired works is a painstaking process. The creative stage invites exploration, but many writers struggle when it's time to transition to the execution phase. Just thinking about writing can feel “formidable, intimidating. A plunge in an icy lake,” as Susan Sontag put it. Committing ideas to words can feel like diving beneath a glacial surface.

Good writers explore the depths of language and creativity to discover a unique narrative style, building a framework that transforms concepts into story, word by word. Editors then step in to help refine the language. They read and reread the piece, finessing structure, revising grammar, correcting spelling, and polishing punctuation.

Journalist and author Lillian Ross once said, “Helpful editors should have the following qualities: understanding of and sympathy for writers; the editorial talent to recognize and appreciate journalistic and literary talent; an openness to all kinds of such talent… energy and resourcefulness in helping writers discover what they should write about.” At its core, editors and writers are defined by the words they use. Writing begins and ends with language, the selection on the palette of vocabulary, grammar and tone.
